How soon is too soon to start applying for college scholarships?

Posted by admin

I’m a junior in high school right now and I was curious as to when I should start applying for scholarships?

There is no such thing as too soon. Most scholarships specify who’s allowed to apply based on things such as year in school, GPA, proposed major, hair color, etc, so make a list of scholarships you currently qualify for and those you will be able to apply for in the future. Then just stay on top of things, and keep cranking out the applications. Some allow you to apply from the moment you’re born, and the money is simply set aside until you start going to college. I’m including two reputable search engines for scholarships, but you can also google "scholarship finder" for more help. I’ve known people who financed their entire education based on finding obscure scholarships, such as one for heavily freckled girls of Irish ancestry. The money is out there, good luck finding it.

What do I include in a personal statement for college scholarships?

Posted by admin

Do they want to know about my kids, my single parentness, why I’m back in college so late, my jobs, my whole life? I know it’s a "personal statement" but how personal should I get?

I would Include that you are a single parent of x number of kids, this shows that you have determination to beat the odds, and accomplish potentially insurmountable tasks. Talk about your jobs, why you want a degree, and why now is the time to get it. Tell the admissions board about your strengths, and tell them that you know you have weaknesses (mention what they are) and that you are working on strengthening those parts of your life. Mention any Interests that you have, and what you plan on majoring in.

NCAA Football 10 for Microsoft Xbox 360

NCAA Football 10 kicks off the 2009 season with a new showdown mode that pits you against the world in weekly challenges consisting of five categories: schedule match-ups, games versus any opponent, games against the computer, trivia, and pick ‘em games. The object is to win three of the five categories each week. Returning from the previous year’s game are online dynasties and the option to create a high-school athlete in his quest to earn a college scholarship. Renamed “Road to Glory with Erin Andrews,” the career mode will now have ESPN’s sideline reporter following your athlete’s milestones and include photos, highlight footage, and interviews for a more personalized take on the action. A new gameplan option lets coaches tweak their team’s style of play by selecting aggressive, balanced, or conservative schemes on both offense and defense, with each scheme offering various strengths and weaknesses. Another risk-reward feature involves ordering your defense to key-in on a specific play. Guess correctly and you’ll increase the likelihood of the play being stopped for a loss. Guess incorrectly and you could place your defense at risk for a big play. Also new is the ability to create up to 12 schools by selecting team colors, uniform styles, stadiums, athlete names, and even fight songs. Created schools can then be taken online to compete in a custom conference. ~ Scott Alan Marriott, All Game Guide Universal Football

How do I find and apply for college scholarships?

Posted by admin

My son will be graduating next year. I have no idea where to locate and apply for scholarships. He wants to be a cardiologist so we are sooooo gonna need help.

First, take a look at the schools he will be applying to. All schools have their own private scholarships, and perhaps your son will qualify for one of those.

Certainly you will want to complete the FAFSA [it is an application, not something you apply for] to find out if you qualify for federal monies. You don’t complete the forms until after Jan. of his senior year in high school. And you will need to have completed your tax forms for the year in order to fill out the information required. The counselor at your son’s school can give you more info.

Check out fastweb.com for a myriad of unusual scholarships, grants and interships that exist. I personally have never known anyone who actually GOT one through the site, but you never know! And again, check with the school. They will possibly have a listing of scholarships offered state-wide and locally.

There are many small scholarships and grants out there for specific populations. My cousin got a scholarship to nursing school because she had asthma and wanted to go into pulmonary nursing. Some unions award scholarships, as well as many companies.

Just beware of the consultants that offer ‘help’ in applying for aid and filling out the FAFSA. You don’t need anyone’s help, so save your money!!! Just do your own research online.

Good luck!

How can a homeschool student qualify for college scholarships?

Posted by admin

We successfully homeschool but don’t know how to obtain scholarships. We know of traditional students who have obtained scholarships for their ACT scores and musical achievements and basketball achievementments. What are available for homeschool students?

Home schoolers can qualify with high scores on ACT and/or SAT scores. Also, check within your state for available scholarships, many like Florida have groups that specifically grant scholarships to home schoolers.

Depending on whether or not you live in a home school friendly community, many home educated are allowed to enter into public school sporting activities as well as music and some are able to earn scholarships from those.

Then of course there is the National Merit Scholarship http://www.nationalmerit.org/ and finally, here is a whole slew of choices http://homeschooling.gomilpitas.com/olderkids/ContestsScholarships.htm

Hope that helps ~ :-)
