How does paying college tuition work?

Posted by admin

I go to an expensive liberal arts college and I was thinking about taking a semester off or transferring if I apply in time because of a problem with my financial aid. We have paid off majority of my tuition for this upcoming spring semester. If I were to take a semester off/transfer would the money that we already paid to this institution go towards another school, or get credited back to us?

They would refund your money if you withdraw from school before this semester starts. You probably will not get the loan money back though….that is institution specific. When you choose a school to transfer to, make sure they will accept transfer credits for the courses you already took.

Good Luck! Hope this helps

Is it true that German college tuition is free?

Posted by admin

My German teacher said that tuition at a German college if free it just depends on if you have the grades to get in.

Yes, it’s more or less true.
Since last year it depends on in which federal state you study. As far as I know Berlin, Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Rheinland-Pfalz, Sachsen-Anhalt, Sachsen, Thüringen and Schleswig-Holstein have no tuition fees. Some universities in these federal states are for instance:
- Friedrich Schiller Universität Jena
- Technische Universität Dresden
- Universität Leipzig
- Humboldt-Universität Berlin

(And you don’t need very good grades for all subjects *g*).

The fees for the universities in all other federal states in Germany are about 500 Euro per term (half year).

College tuition for child support after age 18 in California?

Posted by admin

My husband has been divorced for over 10 years and he has been paying his child support every month. When he divorced there was nothing put in the paperwork about having to pay for college tuition for his daughter. The divorce happened in California. I know the law says until 18 or 19 once high school is complete and that there is no forced college support in California but can his ex-wife ask him for this or can the courts force him to pay for college? Plus if the law ever changes would they go by the new law or when the divorce occurred?

I’m going through this now with my man and his ex. It only matters what the law is now. In the fine print in WA St. it says the judge can make the decision either way whether it’s the law or not.

go to Dads.com they have allot of answers and support.

Small Business Owners Can Save Thousands on College Costs!

Posted by admin

College and college-bound families should be looking into a unique opportunity to save tens of thousands of dollars on college costs for school year 2007-2008.

For the very first time, there’s a loophole in the 2007-2008 Free Application for Federal Student Aid, (FAFSA). As a result, families who own and control a small business and who are only required to complete the FAFSA, have a rare opportunity to capitalize on a financial aid bonanza!

I direct your attention to a provision in the Higher Education Reconciliation Act of 2005 (S. 9132), which was approved by the Senate on Dec. 31, 2005, by the House on Feb. 2, 2006, and signed into law by President Bush on Feb. 8, 2006, that states, “The net value of small businesses with not more than 100 full-time equivalent employees is excluded from the definition of assets.”

Accordingly, small business owners (parents, not students), or those who can legally set up a small business under the federal guidelines, will reap huge rewards in the form of untold thousands in financial aid previously unobtainable!

It is highly advisable to set up a C or S Corporation, LLC, or at the very least, obtain an Employer Identification Number (EIN) for a Schedule C business. In that way, the small business will have its own individual tax status. However, I recommend that a tax advisor be consulted before choosing any particular corporate entity.

529 Plan owners can benefit as well

In the financial aid formulas, students have no asset protection allowance, which means that for every dollar a student has, they lose 20 cents per year in financial aid. Parents fare far better and only lose 5.6% per year over their allowance which increases with age. Now that both 529 Pre-paid Tuition and 529 Savings Plans are considered parent assets. I recommend the following:

For 529 Plan owners, it’s a bit more complex. Those parents who own one can legally transfer the entire account value into a similar plan owned by their small business entity, but need to be aware of the downside. The transfer could trigger a taxable event, but only on the gains in the 529 Savings Plan. Once the transfer has taken place, if the beneficiary is ever changed, it could also result in a taxable event. Nonetheless, the strategy makes perfectly good sense, as the benefits far outweigh any modest income tax consequences. Go for it!

My parents are divorced, how does college tuition affect me?

Posted by admin

I live with my mom in NC and want to go to college in OH(where my dad lives) but my mom doesnt want to pay $24,000 out of state compared to $9,000 in state, am i going to have to pay out of state tuition?

OK here is what you should do. When you think about your future, think about how you will pay off those loans. You will have to take loans in order to pay for out of state fees.

This is what I did. I went to community college first. Community colleges offer the same courses as Universities for first two years. You will will save so much money on basic college courses. Example, in a community college, you will pay $28 to $30 per unit. In a University, same course will cost you $350. After two years of college course, you can transferred out to a University. It will take you 4 years this way as well. Plus, you will save so much money.
Also, why are you thinking about loans. Apply to financial aid. Never show your parents’ income. When you fill the application for financial aid, say that you are a full time student and you pay your parent rent at home. Show your expenses. More expenses you show, more free money you will get.
This is how I did it. I have Bachelors degree and I have no loans on my head.
