Yesterday, Margaret Spellings announced the release of a new online tool that will help high school juniors plan for college. The “FAFSA4caster” was designed to calculate a student’s eligibility for federal student aid, and reduce the time that it takes to submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid “FAFSA”.
“Improving college access and affordability are key to giving more Americans a chance at higher education and keeping America competitive,” said Secretary Spellings. “Families need more information—sooner—about students’ federal aid eligibility so that they can plan ahead for college. The FAFSA4caster gives families an important tool they can use to make decisions about the future.”
Secretary Spellings’ FAFSA tool is the newest development in a wave of government initiatives that seek to provide the economically underprivileged with improved access to higher education. By allowing students to see how much aid they qualify for the FAFSA4caster will empower them: as we’ve seen before, many students that live in low-income families actually avoid attending college simply because they fear debt accrual. Spellings new initiative will allow students to know exactly how much aid they can expect to receive well in advance, giving would-be-students valuable access to financial planning capabilities.
Update on Student Loan Scrutiny and Pell Money
In addition to the FAFSA4caster, New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo has also been gaining a lot of media attention. Previously, we’ve discussed how the New York AG is investigating the relationship between financial aid offices of colleges and universities, and lending institutions that specialize in student loans. Since the last time we mentioned the investigation, there have been quite a few developments; most recently Cuomo announced that he plans to sue one lender, that he alleges repeatedly offered financial incentive to more than 60 schools nationwide in order to gain preferential business:
“This kickback scheme was widespread and took place from coast-to-coast, at colleges, large and small, public and private,” said Mr. Cuomo, in a statement. “This lawsuit is just the beginning of an investigation that will show that lenders put market share above fair play.”
Cuomo isn’t the only one looking into the ties between lenders and colleges: Today, Senator Kennedy announced that at least 14 loan providers will receive inquiries that seek to identify whether the institutions in question offered kickbacks to colleges and universities. In a statement, Kennedy said:
“When students take out loans to pay for college, they should be assured that the relationship between the school and their lender is free of bias or conflict of interest”
By dis-articulating any relationships that may exist between loan offices and lenders, the initiatives of Kennedy and Cuomo will force lenders to promote their services to prospective students in new, more competitive ways. It follows that the increased competition will result in lower interest rates for students.
The exact effect that these investigations will have on the business of student loans remains to be seen. We will continue to monitor and update as the issues develop.

For busy working adults who want to get a university or college degree, perhaps the best way to do so is to study online. There are many long distance accredited and good online colleges and universities to choose from. Just do a search for online university degrees and you will see many institutions offering online degree courses for basic degrees to MBAs and even Doctorate PhDs in business, wealth management, technology management, information systems, education and even in nursing.
Why study for an online degree? This is because for most working adults, taking time off to go to classrooms or campuses for lessons regularly is almost an impossible task and this is a very important reason why so many working adults are deprived of good university degrees. By giving lessons online, these long distance colleges and universities are able to reach out to these potential adult students who otherwise may never have any opportunities to get a university or college degree.
Since these degrees are long distance online courses, you can simply log on to your computer and start the lessons immediately. The convenience of the Internet makes earning your degree not only possible but much more affordable as well because these universities and colleges do not need to count the costs and overheads they need to incur should you attend classroom on campus lessons.
Many of these universities, for example, The University of Phoenix Online also offer financial assistance and flexible fee payment plans. You may wish to check with the university of your choice on the various types of financial aids available.
Perhaps the most attractive thing about studying for a degree online is that you can study anytime you want to, study where you are without wasting commuting time and for some, there are no timelines for lessons, tutorials, projects and even examinations.
Most online universities and colleges give their long distance learning students the same exacting standard of quality education, curriculum, faculty and resources, the same as those offered at their brick and mortar campuses. You can then have the luxury to complete your education at the time and place most convenient to you. All you need is a computer, a phone connection, and an internet service provider. Most people in developed countries will have no problem setting this up or already have internet connection set up.
With easy to use Internet access software, you have access to lectures, questions and assignments from your professors and then you can print them out and review them off-line. You will also have access to a full range of online research libraries and services.
At the same time, you can also interact with other successful professionals, sharing ideas, debating issues, and learning from their experience.Throughout whatever degree courses you are studying, your instructors will provide guidance and feedback on your progress.
All interaction is conducted online, so you can participate at your own time and convenience. You never have to rush from the office or your home to a night-class or miss a lecture because of some time scheduling conflict.
Want to get an online university degree? Your opportunity may now be here.

Naturally, when you are researching auto mechanic programs, one of your main concerns is cost. To many people, the tuition charged by auto tech schools seems exorbitant when compared with the less expensive programs offered at community colleges. However, as a school that specializes in one area of instruction, an automotive school offers many benefits over a low budget community college program.
For instance, most auto tech schools offer better equipment than community colleges. The reason for this is that community colleges depend on the government for their funding, and as a result are constantly struggling to pay their teachers, let alone stay up to date on equipment for their students. On the other hand, the tuition you pay at an automotive school ensures that the school can provide and maintain state of the art equipment for its students.
Another advantage of the degree programs offered by auto tech schools is superior teachers. Under funding at community colleges also results in underpaid teachers, which usually means that the best and most knowledgeable teachers won’t settle for a job at a community college. Also, since an automotive school specializes in their field, rather than offering classes simply as an alternative for non-traditional or non-academic students, they tend to look for teachers who are better qualified to teach their subject.
The curriculum offered by an automotive school is also generally higher quality than those offered by community colleges. Again, this has to do with the fact that auto tech schools specialize in one field. As a result, a school that focuses on automotive training will be able to offer a choice of several different degree programs, including programs for earning Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications. ASE certifications are an important part of the automotive industry, as they demonstrate to employers and customers alike that a mechanic has mastered his or her areas of certification; as such, any good automotive education program will train and test students in the areas of ASE certification.
Besides factors that are directly related to the quality of a student’s education, such as high quality equipment, teachers, and educational programs, as private institutions auto tech schools can also offer superior student services, such as job placement services. Job placement services in particular are very important, as the primary reason for pursuing an education is to become more qualified for a specific job or career. Auto tech schools tend to have an office dedicated to helping graduates find jobs, and usually have a good reputation with local employers. Additionally, many auto tech schools have long term relationships with local business, meaning that many of these businesses go directly to the school when they are in need of interns or fulltime mechanics. All of these factors help the graduates of an auto tech school find jobs more easily than those who attended a community college.
Saving yourself money by attending a community college program may seem like a wise decision, but in the long run it may have a detrimental impact on your career path. Factors such as the curriculum, teachers, and equipment dictate how much you learn and how well you learn it, while support services for students, such as job placement assistance, help you translate your education into a career. The extra money it costs to enroll in a degree program at an auto tech school may be the difference between a quality education and mediocre training, a career in the fast track or just a job.

We live in a microwave culture that wants results faster, easier and more conveniently. The world of education is no different, where many courses ranging from Bachelors to Phd degrees are being offered online.
Getting a college degree requires time, effort and money and to cut corners, you might be tempted to get your degree through a mail-order or online program you see being advertised at the back of some tabloid. Hold your horses!
Indeed, online education is a viable option for those seeking an alternative to brick-and-mortar classes but you must do your due diligence and make sure that the distance learning school you are considering is accredited.
Accreditation ensures that the online institution is provides quality education and not some Mickey Mouse stuff you could learn in the third grade.
In the United States, accreditation involves non-governmental entities as well as governmental agencies.
Accrediting agencies are private educational associations of regional or national scope that develop evaluation criteria and conduct peer evaluations to assess whether those criteria are met.
Institutions and/or programs that requests an agency’s evaluation and subsequently meets that agency’s criteria are then accredited by that agency.
Without this seal of approval what you will get after graduation is really a worthless piece of bond paper, not a bona fide degree.
So how can you tell the unscrupulous online colleges from the good ones? Here are some pointers:
1)Be wary of life experience courses. One of the warning signs of a bad school is if it claims to offer an accredited life experience degree without any classes or examinations. These could be a BA or an MBA. Don’t be fooled. There is no such thing as an accredited degree that is based purely on life experience.
2)Check the accreditation agencies that they mention as many are usually non-existent and so getting their certificates are a waste of time and money.
If they are certified by the following agencies then they are not solely a diploma factory.
a) DETC: Distance Education and Training Council
b) MSA: Middle States Association
c) NCASC: North Central Association of Schools and
Colleges
d) NEASC: New England Association of Schools and
colleges
e) NWCCU: Northwest Commission on College and
Universities
f) SACS: Southwest Association of Colleges and
Schools
g) WASC: Western Association of Schools and Colleges
Now, how do you check their accreditation? Well, you first ask the school.
Reputable schools will have no problems at all telling you if they are accredited. Moreover, they will tell you in what State they are accredited and which educational governing bodies have accredited them. To make extra sure, you can check with the institution itself that accredited them.
Still, some schools will try their very best to give the appearance of being accredited. They do this by using such words as “authorized”, “legitimate” or “pursuing accreditation.” Again, don’t be taken in by this. Judge an online school by their association; not by their buildings, address or the persuasive advertisements they placed in the tabloids.
3)Another crucial thing to look out for is the online school’s operating license. Every institution of higher learning must have a charter for operations in a particular state. If they don’t have one, then they are operating illegally and most likely a fly-by-night. You need to steer clear of them also.
4)Applying for Federal Student Aid (FSA) Tuition Assistance can also help to validate an institution’s credentials.
In order for a student to receive financial assistance to pay for his education, the school must petition the federal government and demonstrate its accreditation status in the first place. If the school isn’t up to par, it won’t qualify. So, if the government won’t pay for you to go there, chances are there is a lack of accreditation.
The bottom line is that you are going to have to spend time, energy and money getting your degree. To ensure that you do not waste either of those things, check out the school first. Doing this will ensure that your school of choice is accredited before you enroll will save you a ton of heartache later.

Colleges and universities within the southern states are now, for the first time ever, showing representation figures that coincide with African American population densities, according to a study by the Southern Regional Education Board. This is above average for the rest of the country, placing what many in other regions typically believe to be a racially oppressed area firmly ahead on matters of educational equality as they pertain to African American students.
The increases have been seen in public universities and associate level colleges rather than at historically African American colleges, for which enrollment has declined over the last decade. This offers an indicator of the mainstreaming of attitudes across minorities toward the educational system as a whole.
The board notes that there are still many hurdles to overcome and problems on the horizon both nationally and in the South. Graduation rates for African Americans are still lower than the national average. The study did not calculate graduation rates for the Southern states region, but an analysis commissioned by The Associated Press calculated the graduation rates for the 16 states in the board’s report.
Erroll Davis, Chancellor of the University System of Georgia, notes that most minority students enroll with lower levels of college preparedness, though, “We’ve removed a lot of the barriers and accepted that we will have to provide higher levels of learning support in the short-term,”
While progress is being made in terms of overall enrollment, more initiatives are needed at the elementary and high school levels to ensure that minority students have the educational foundation necessary to succeed at the collegiate level. Active enrollment is a positive step but until graduation rates are on par with non-minority students, the post college playing field is unequal.
Within the minority groups represented in the study, graduation rates from the Associated Press data vary substantially. Hispanics are now the most underrepresented group in colleges and universities across the South, yet have higher graduation rates than African American students. Six-year graduation rates were 40 percent for African Americans, 46 percent for Hispanics, and 56 percent for whites compared to 41 percent, 44 percent and 60 percent respectively nationwide.
